I grew up in Barnstaple, It's a wonderful little market town in North Devon, with history going back to the 7th Century,( My research).
It was one the few locations where you could cross the River Taw and through the ages, there have been many bridges across the Taw. Once a very thriving Town with a very active port and connections across the world. The trade of wool by Merchants allowed fortunes to be made and money was put back into the community, by the provision of Alms Houses in the Town. Once a wall ran around the Town for protection, but now the gates have been removed and much of the wall removed.
